2025 General Budget Unveils 7 Mega Projects for Bihar: Nirmala Sitharaman’s Strategic Push Ahead of Assembly Elections

By Vishwapati

Patna: In a strategic move to bolster support in Bihar ahead of the 2025 Assembly Elections, the Central Government has unveiled seven landmark initiatives for the state through the General Budget 2025. These announcements, targeting key regions like Magadh, Mithilaanchal, Seemanchal, and Shahabad, aim to strengthen infrastructure, agriculture, and technology while easing the electoral path for Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and the BJP alliance.

Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has sought to win over the Magadh region by announcing the expansion of Patna Airport and IIT Patna, while Mithilanchal has been targeted with the establishment of a Makhana Board. Additionally, an attempt has been made to garner support in Seemanchal through a dedicated budget for the Kosi Canal and in Shahabad through the expansion of Bihta Airport. These announcements are being widely linked to the Bihar Assembly elections scheduled for later this year.

Key Regional Allocations in Bihar’s 2025 Budget:

1. Magadh Region: Expansion of Patna Airport and IIT Patna to boost connectivity and education.

2. Mithilaanchal: Establishment of the Makhana Board to promote the region’s iconic aquatic cash crop.

3. Seemanchal: Revival of the Kosi Canal Project to address irrigation and water management.

4. Shahabad: Development of Bihta Airport to enhance regional air connectivity.

5. Statewide Growth: Construction of three new greenfield airports, a National Food Technology Institute, and a dedicated budget for the Western Kosi Canal.

Political Implications and Opposition Reactions

The budget’s focus on Bihar underscores the Central Government’s efforts to counter long-standing demands for Special State Status—a key rallying point for opposition parties. Critics argue that while Nitish Kumar previously championed this cause, his silence now reflects political compromise. The opposition alleges these announcements are timed to sway voters, sidestepping deeper structural reforms.

Why It Matters

With Bihar’s elections looming, the budget strategically addresses regional disparities and local demands. Projects like the Makhana Board cater to agrarian communities, while infrastructure upgrades aim to position Bihar as an investment hub. However, the absence of Special Status remains a contentious issue, leaving room for electoral debate.

The 2025 Budget serves as both a development blueprint and a political masterstroke for the BJP-Nitish Kumar alliance. By balancing regional aspirations with visible projects, the Central Government aims to solidify its foothold in Bihar’s high-stakes electoral battleground.
