Bhagalpur: A well at circulating area of Maheshmunda station located in Madhupur-Giridih section of Asansol railway division under eastern railway is alike any other common well. However, taking into consideration its historical importance and pure water quality the well has been properly renovated by Eastern Railway.
At time when wells are no more found in railway premises, influenced by historical importance of the well referred by locals of Maheshmunda, the decision of renovating and maintaining the well was taken by railways.
Though no documented information as such regarding historical importance of the well has been found by railways however taking note what is largely stated by locals the well has been retained and renovated besides decision has been taken by railways for its proper maintenance.
As per local references water of the well used for drinking purposes enhances digestive capability. The further information gathered by railways based on local references state Prince Dwaraka Nath Tagore of Tagore family used to drink water lifted from the well at Maheshmunda station because of its pure water quality.
The water lifted from the well used to be transported in jars to Tagore’s Jorasanko residence at Kolkata for Prince Dwaraka Nath Tagore through railway route. Prince Dwaraka Nath Tagore son of Ramlochan Tagore was founder of Jorasanko branch of Tagore family.
He was grandfather of Rabindranath Tagore. On completion of renovation work of well at Maheshmunda station, through an eastern railway press note issued today it has been communicated that the well approximately 4.25 meters in diameter is 30 ft deep. Strongly fabricated, the well is located in rocky area.
It has been further communicated the well at Maheshmunda station was well known to people in West Bengal and other adjoining states in past. Few decades back when piped drinking water was not available in abundance the well at Mahesh Munda station served as principal source of potable water for people in residing in Mahesh Munda and other adjoining areas.
Largely believed the water of the well enhances digestive capability, many residing in the area still use water of the well for drinking purposes.
