Bhagalpur: To cope with the problem of shortage of teachers in colleges and postgraduate departments, better capacity utilisation of the available workforce is under serious consideration at the authoritative level in T M Bhagalpur University (TMBU).

It might not be long before a teacher of a certain subject in a college or postgraduate department is given the job of teaching the same subject in other colleges and postgraduate departments that have a severe teacher shortage.

As per available information, though modalities for the purpose are yet to be decided, exercises for exploring the possibility have started in the university in light of the directive of Prof Jawahar Lal, Vice-Chancellor (VC). Previously, the university employed guest teachers in a number of colleges and postgraduate departments to address the problem of teacher shortages.

However, the university was unable to overcome its teacher shortage completely by engaging guest teachers. In fact, a sizeable number of colleges and postgraduate departments continue to grapple with the problem. At some colleges, the majority of posts for regular teachers in certain subjects are vacant.

The physics department of the local Marwari College could be a case in point. As per information, all posts of regular teacher are presently vacant in the department. The department is being run by a guest teacher who engages in classes at both intermediate and degree levels.

The physics department of Marwari College is not an isolated case. There are still other departments in different constituent colleges as well as postgraduate departments where responsibility for engaging classes primarily remains with guest teachers, with the majority of posts for regular teachers remaining vacant.

A shortage of teachers in colleges and postgraduate departments has created problems with holding all classes regularly. Due to the problem, completing courses on time is proving to be a major challenge for college and postgraduate authorities.

Members of the university academic circle believe that better capacity utilisation of available manpower could alleviate the problem of shortage to a significant extent. According to information, the Bhagalpur University Service Teachers Association (BHUSTA) is also of the view that if the university goes ahead with its plan of allowing teachers of a college or postgraduate department to engage classes in other colleges and postgraduate departments, it could be an effective stop gap measure for overcoming the problem of shortage.
