Bhagalpur: The Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU) move of cancelling summer vacation this year has been strongly resented by teachers. Agitated teachers registered strong protest against the decision in their meeting with Dr Jawahar Lal, Vice Chancellor (VC) on Monday..
The teachers who had been to VC residence to meet him camped their till late evening demanding firm commitment from him regarding withdrawal of the notification concerning cancellation of summer vacation. The university notification related to cancellation of summer vacation it may be mentioned was issued on May 28.
Citing directive of chancellor given for regularizing session and informing about approval of academic council and syndicate, the notification stated university has decided to cancel summer vacation. The notification further stated that for service rendered during summer vacation teachers would be compensated by granting them Earned Leave for summer vacation period.
In case of extreme urgency, the teachers would be able to avail leave during summer vacation period seeking approval of their respective authority, the notification added.
The teachers are resenting move of university on ground it is their right to have summer vacation since they have less earned leave and casual leave in a calendar year compared to other category employees. The teachers in most cases are of the opinion that there would be no effect on examination schedule of university because of summer vacation.
Prof Jagdhar Mandal, general secretary, Bhagalpur University Service Teachers Association (BHUSTA) said in no case university examinations would be delayed because of summer vacation.
Informing earlier also examinations have been held during summer vacation he said it is common practice available teachers extend all cooperation in smooth conduct of examination and evaluation works held during summer vacation.
Moreover, only two minor examinations namely of B.Ed and a professional course is scheduled during summer vacation this year, Prof Mandal informed adding hence there is no need of cancelling summer vacation. He further said sudden university decision of cancelling summer vacation has upset travel plan of many teachers.
Reiterating the available teachers would ensure there is no problem for university in conducting examination and evaluation works during summer vacation the BHUSTA general secretary said the university should consider rescinding its decision at the earliest.
Informing teachers would meet VC once again today he said in case meeting fails to yield desired result further course of action would be decided in BHUSTA general body meeting. Meanwhile as per information the meeting held yesterday between VC and teachers on the issue failed to make any headway.
The teachers were told by authorities present in the meeting that since copy of the notification regarding cancellation of summer vacation has been sent to chancellor hence any change in the decision would require approval of chancellor.
The VC however asked BUUSTA leadership to give in writing that they would ensure smooth conduct of examination and evaluation works during summer vacation. The written assurance would be forwarded to office of chancellor, he reportedly told teachers.
