Param Shivay Supercomputer of IIT-BHU Celebrates Three Years of Successful Operation

Varanasi:  IIT (BHU) Varanasi marked a major milestone in 2019 with the inauguration of India’s first indigenously assembled supercomputer, “Param Shivay,” as part of the National Supercomputing Mission (NSM). The dignified event was graced by the presence of Honorable Prime Minister  Narendra Modi and IIT(BHU) Director Prof. Pramod Kumar Jain, held at the institute’s premises. Three years have now passed since the successful launch of “Param Shivay”, marking a significant journey for the NSM. The development of this high-performance computing system is a testament to India’s growing capabilities in the field of technology and its commitment to advancing scientific research and innovation.

IIT (BHU) has reached new heights with the successful operation of the “Param Shivay” supercomputer, which has been running non-stop for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, for the past three years, even during the COVID pandemic. Managed by IIT (BHU), the center has become a crucial resource for research for not only the institute and BHU, but also for organizations and institutes across the country. With its exceptional computing capabilities, IIT (BHU) is at the forefront of providing cutting-edge facilities to support India’s scientific and technological advancements. The Param Shivay provides supercomputing facilities to over 23 premium institutes across the country, including various IITs, NITs, IIITs, and many more.

It has successfully handled over 850 active users simultaneously for the past three years. The supercomputer has become a beacon of hope for researchers in India, who now have access to cutting-edge technology and facilities that are on par with the best in the world. IIT(BHU) has once again shown its unwavering commitment to providing the best for its researchers, and for the advancement of scientific and technological research in India. The successful operation of the “Param Shivay” supercomputer is a testament to the institute’s dedication and hard work in the field of technology.

A number of publications have recognized the capabilities of the “Param Shivay” supercomputer at IIT(BHU). The facility has a high computation utilization, serving a wide range of domains including AI/ML/DL, Computational Science, Computational Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Quantum Chemistry, atomic and molecular sciences, computational fluid dynamics, neuroinformatics, bioinformatics, civil engineering and meteorology, astrophysics, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, pharmaceutics and drug discovery, health and medical, pollution control, astrophysics, mechanics and automobile, Artificial Intelligence, and robotics.

When the server was first established, it was equipped with applications that catered to limited domains. However, with continued user feedback and requests and support from a dedicated team, the server now contains a vast selection of open-source applications that cater to many more domains. This expanded offering is a testament to the commitment of the IIT(BHU) team to continuously improve the capabilities of the “Param Shivay” supercomputer and support the needs of researchers across the country.

IIT(BHU) Director Prof. Pramod Kumar Jain has expressed his satisfaction and congratulated the Coordinator of the facility, Dr. Hari Prabhat Gupta and others on the successful three-year journey of the “Param Shivay” supercomputer. The institute has provided both financial and infrastructure support, and is now extending its support to reach the next milestone of converting more application domains, research directors, and critical missions into uses.

Prof. Jain expressed his appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the team behind the “Param Shivay” supercomputer. He acknowledged the institute’s commitment to providing financial and infrastructural support, which has been instrumental in the success of the supercomputer.  With continued support from IIT(BHU), the supercomputer is poised to reach even greater heights and make a positive impact on the advancement of research and innovation in the country.
