Varanasi: The Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution (MoCA), celebrated the National Consumer Day on December 24 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. On this occasion, IIT-BHU and Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) signed an MoU for ‘Knowledge Partnership for Digital Metrology’ in the presence of Union minister Piyush Goel. This partnership has ushered in an era of active coordination between IIT-BHU and MoCA.
Knowledge partnership with the ministry will provide a platform for research & development, teaching and training in the field of digital metrology, for accurate and consistent electronic measurement and instrumentation in various consumer goods and products being commercialised in the country. IIT-BHU will support the Department of Consumer Affairs (MoCA) to bring innovative, cutting-edge technologies and global standards in consumer goods and products, through the development, integration, and technology extension projects as well as manpower training for tamper-proof instrumentation. Indian Institute of Technology -BHU Varanasi has signed an MoU with the Department of Consumer Affairs (DoCA) to establish knowledge partnership for ‘digital metrology’ to strengthen legal metrology in India.
The move will strengthen the spirit of collaboration between IIT-BHU Varanasi and DoCA. The technical innovation in precise measurement and instrumentation in consumer goods and product deliveries will have a great impact on the growth and development of the country. The knowledge partnership, IIT-BHU will support the preparation of handbooks/literature/case studies on bare minimum standards of digital metrology compliance and implementation in consumer goods. Standards on legal metrology will also be introduced in the course curricula of UG and PG programs at various core and interdisciplinary levels.
Under this MoU, IIT-BHU will offer executive training programmes to train the government officials pursuing legal metrology officials, across the country, and associate with the Indian Institute of Legal Metrology (IILM), Ranchi, as well. This partnership will also have faculty development programmes on digital metrology. The specialized facilities developed under the partnership will attract sponsored projects from government and private agencies for cutting-edge research and development. Further, industrial consultancies through this partnership will help infrastructure development.
The MoU will augment the methods and approaches to bring state-of-the-art electronics in digital metrology in Indian consumer goods and global standards. This association will help the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, bring justice and transparency in the public distribution system through electronic measurements and instrumentation systems, being used at fuel stations or in gas flow meters or in energy meters and even in digital weighing machines, which affects every Indian citizen on a daily basis. Interdisciplinary expertise available with IIT (BHU) Varanasi, across its 18+ departments and their multiple research groups is the backbone for the success of this knowledge partnership. Under this partnership, both IIT (BHU) Varanasi and DoCA will join hands to solve major legal metrology issues faced in consistent measurements and product delivery at the minutest levels of an individual consumer.
