Patna, July 30: Union Minister and firebrand BJP leader Giriraj Singh on Saturday took strong exception to change of weekly holidays form Sunday to Friday by some government schools in Bihar.
The change in weekly holidays was “like Sharia law” and had been done in violation of the law of the country, he told reporters at Patna airport.
Singh arrived in Patna on Saturday to attend the two-day joint national executive meeting of various cells of the BJP
“There should be a rule of law in the country. Weekly holiday in school and offices are being observed in India on Sunday since Independence. Any change in this without any official permission is illegal,” Singh said.
According to reports as many as 37 government schools in Kishanganj, a district in northeast Bihar having a significant Muslim population, had been observing holidays on Friday.
Earlier on Tuesday, Bihar education minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary had said that an inquiry had been ordered into the matter and the district education officer of Kishanganj asked to submit a report.
“Appropriate action will be taken after receiving the report,” he had said, adding that all state-run schools were bound to follow the government rules.
