BAU Looking Forward Towards Playing Pro Active Role in Revival of Bhagalpur Silk Industry

Bhagalpur, May 10, 2024: Looking forward towards playing proactive role in revival of local silk industry, the Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour intends to address problem of availability of cocoons and silk yarn, a major constraint in development of the industry.

By creation of work force of females in rural areas trained in production of silk raw materials cocoons and yarn, the university has planned to assist revival of local silk industry. For attaining the objective BAU has decided to work together with ECO Tasar Silk Pvt.Ltd associated with production of silk fabrics.

To prepare work plan for skilling females in rural areas, a meeting was held in university on Thursday this week. In the meeting chaired by Vice Chancellor (VC) D R Singh those present included Chhitis Pandaya, Managing Director, ECO Tasar Pvt.Ltd apart from concerned university officials.

With twin objectives of facilitating revival of local silk industry and economic empowerment of females in rural areas through cocoon and yarn production, the modalities of work plan were discussed in the meeting.

K Satyanaryana, principal, Dr Kalam Agriculture College, Kishanganj besides scientists of the college present in the meeting had elaborate discussion with managing director of ECO Tasar Pvt.Ltd on ground level execution of the plan related to creation of trained work force of females in rural areas. The yarn quality requirement of local industry was taken note in course of discussion in meeting.

It may be worth mentioning here shortage of silk yarn is one of the major reasons the local industry is facing prolonged slump. Despite high demand of local silk particularly Tasar silk in both domestic and overseas market, the local industry is unable to match production with demand due to yarn shortage.

Market prices of yarn remaining unstable almost round the year because of shortage, the silk producers many a times are unable to make supply against order on quoted price.

VC, BAU said it has been decided a center for empowering female farmers would be opened in university soon. The center will have all required facilities for imparting training related to requirements of silk industry and other agriculture-based industries. Promotion of cocoon and yarn production among females in rural areas he felt would help revival of local silk industry.

Meanwhile following discussion in the meeting, it was decided a demonstration programme on cocoon and yarn production would be organized at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Banka.

As a step towards facilitating revival of local silk industry the meeting also decided to provide subsidy between four lakhs to twenty-five lakhs to silk entrepreneurs under Sabour Agri Incubators (SABAGRIs) three scheme. The university officials present in the meeting included Anil Kumar Singh, director (research).
