Varanasi, July 16: Banaras Hindu University vice-chancellor Prof Sudhir Kumar Jain said that the university will do all that is required to provide best of the facilities and opportunities to its students. Addressing students of the varsity at a fully-packed Swatantrata Bhawan on Friday he said that his administration was constantly working to ensure the best of campus life and learning experience for the students.

This was the first formal interaction of the vice-chancellor with students since assuming charge in January this year. Sharing his life journey from a student belonging to an ordinary family to becoming what he is today, Prof Jain said that one must pursue a bigger goal in life and aim to bring about positive transformation. “As a faculty member at IIT Kanpur, I had one clear goal of saving lives lost due to earthquakes in India and kept pursuing it. In the process I kept striving while improving myself as a professional”, he said. He exhorted students to make use of facilities and resources available for them in the university and develop a positive attitude and values, a bigger vision in life, and build life skills in their pursuit of life and career.

The vice-chancellor said admitting and recruiting meritorious people (students and staff), providing them resources to function, and building a culture of cooperation, trust and collegiality are the three most important things for any educational institution to excel.

He said that over the course of the past six months he has tried to build a better and harmonious work culture in the university so that a sense of striving together is developed.

He said that respect for rules and discipline is at the core of success of any institution. “Hence, it is expected from one and all to follow the rules in all sincerity and not break those. If the rules are too tough and need to be made lenient, the university should consider doing so” he said.

Prof Jain said that Banaras Hindu University wants its students to get the best of the opportunities and grow in their careers, but it is for the students to aspire for success in life, not only as professionals but also as good human beings.

Responding to questions of students, the vice-chancellor said that sometimes resources may be limited and there may be other challenges but nothing will stop his administration in facilitating students in pursuing their aspirations.

He suggested that the dean of students may create a new email-id for prompt and effective redressal of delays in release of Ph.D. fellowships. He informed that efforts are on to make reading arrangements in girls hostels. He said that a proposal of building girls hostels of 2000 capacity is also under consideration.

Rector Prof V K Shukla while delivering the opening remarks said that members of BHU fraternity are excited and elated to have Prof Jain as vice-chancellor. Hailing Prof Jain for his connect with students, Prof Shukla expressed confidence that BHU is poised to scale new heights under the leadership of Prof Sudhir Kumar Jain.

Registrar, Prof Arun Kumar Singh called upon students to not confine themselves to gaining theoretical knowledge only while they are on campus but also to work towards their holistic development. Dean of students, Prof A K Nema proposed a vote of thanks.
