Bhagalpur: In a major accident, the superstructure of underconstruction four-lane bridge over river Ganga connecting Sultanganj in Bhagalpur district and Aguwani ghat in Khagaria district collapsed this evening.
As per preliminary information nearly hundred feet of the superstructure consisting 30 slabs collapsed and fell down in river. However there is no report of any injury or casualty.
It is second time a major portion of the under construction bridge has collapsed. Earlier in April last year also quite a sizeable portion of structure of the bridge had collapsed in storm.
A through enquiry assisted by technical experts from IIT had been undertaken last year to ascertain reason of accident following collapse of portion of structure.of the bridge.
At an estimated cost of more Rs 1700 crore the construction work of the bridge was initiated in 2015. Tentatively inauguration of the four-lane bridge was scheduled by end of current year. Construction of the bridge would ensure better connectivity between this part of state with districts of state located in northern side of river Ganga.
The bridge on completion of construction work would provide an additional link between NH – 80 and NH -31. Meanwhile official statement abouts reasons leading to collapse of superstructure of under construction bridge is awaited.
