IIT(BHU) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for introducing Indian standards as an integral part of research and teaching. This initiative is towards institutionalizing the engagement of BIS with eminent institutes for securing active participation of academia. Recently an MoU was signed with BIS for the establishment of ‘BIS Standardization Chair Professor’ at the institutes. The collaboration between IIT (BHU) Varanasi, an Institute of National Importance, and BIS, a national standards body of standardization certification, is likely to make a bigger impact for technology development in the field.

Professor Pramod Kumar Jain, the Director, IIT(BHU) informed that the establishment of these Chair Professors will promote excellence and leadership in teaching and research & development in the field of Science and various disciplines in these participating institutes. He also envisioned the need to engage with start-ups & incubation centres while formulating new standards and their compliance with the existing standards as well.

“The MoU between the premium academic institutes like IIT (BHU) Varanasi & BIS would strengthen and enhance the standards formulation activity by facilitating Research & Development projects, encouraging the involvement of young minds in the area of the standardization process. Furthermore, several seminars, conferences, workshops, symposia or lectures, training and short-term education programs will be jointly organised under the MoU,” he said.

Technology innovation and standards development must be linked together to foster the development of technology-oriented products and services. While we are emphasizing “Make in India” and “AatmaNirbhar Bharat” as the vision of the Prime Minister of making India a self-reliant nation, it is essential to ensure good standards of indigenous technology. The MoU is likely to be a big step in this direction, says Prof Vikash Kumar Dubey, Dean (R&D) of the Institute.
