Excavation Work at Jungleswar Tila Likely to Reveal Buried Facts Related to Vikramshila Mahavihara

Bhagalpur: Located close to ruins of Vikramshila -Mahavihara in Antichak village of Kahalgaon subdivision in this district, at Jungleswar Tila the work of excavation was formally started on Friday this week. The archeologically important excavation work is likely to help establish historical missing links concerning the ancient seat of learning.

The excavation work would be carried out under supervision of Archeological Survey of India (ASI), Patna circle. A puja performed at site of Jungleswar Tila marked beginning of excavation work.

Believed to be a hidden tressure trove, at local level the historians and common people having keen interest in conservation and development of site of excavated ruins of ancient university, mostly feel excavation of Jungleswar Tila would lead to recovery archeologically important objects and artifacts.

Pawan Choudhury, a journalist who is also convenor of Vikramshila Media Group said initiating excavation work at Jungleswar Tila had been a long pending demand of people interested in further exploration of hidden facts concerning Vikramshila-Mahavihara.

Choudhary informed in past archeologically important objects and artifacts including a Navagraha panel was found near Jungleswar Tila. Recovery of important objects and artifacts near the Tila occasionally, hints at possibility that a historically and archeologically important treasure trove lies buried at the place, he added.

Choudhury said out of total 116 acres land acquired in past for excavating ruins of Vikramshila- Mahavihara, the excavation work was carried out in 100 acre acquired land. Jungleswar Tila where temple of Jungleswar Mahadev is located is situated at a distance of little more than two kilometer from site of excavated ruins, he added.

It may be worth mentioning work for excavating ruins of ancient university had been taken up between 1960-69 under supervision of B P Sinha of Patna University. The excavation of the ruins had revealed structural works supposed to be undertaken in the period early 9 th century and early 13 th AD.

Excavation work at Jungleswar Tila it is felt would reveal many hitherto unknown facts related to Vikramshila -Mahavira. As per available information only one third area of buried ruins of ancient seat of learning was covered under excavation work undertaken by ASI in past. Jungleswar Tila is situated outside the area where excavation work was undertaken in past.
