Bihar Govt approves Chess in School project

Patna: Bihar government through the Bihar State Sports Authority is continuously striving and committed for the development of various sports in Bihar. Chess has been kept in the priority category along with other games.

State government believes that regular practice of chess is a scientifically proven powerful medium for the mental and personality development of the students.

The experimental project ‘Chess in School’ proposed by the All Bihar Chess Association to be included in the curriculum of chess in schools has got green signal from the government. Chess will be taught in government schools of the state. The project will be started by the Bihar Education Project through the Bihar State Sports Authority.

As an experiment under this project, two schools from all blocks of 15 districts (Patna, Lakhisarai, Chhapra, Muzaffarpur, Siwan, Samastipur, Rohtas, Darbhanga, Saharsa, Madhepura, Katihar, Bhagalpur, Purnia, Buxar and Arrah) will be selected in the first phase. Primary chess training will be given to their teachers by identifying 2 schools through Block/District Education Officer. This chess training will be given by trained and certified coaches.

After training, these teachers will give basic chess lessons to primary class students in their respective schools. In the next phase of the scheme, some more districts will be included.

This important step taken by the government for the development of chess at the basic level in Bihar will certainly prove to be a milestone.
