Bihar Braces for Intense Heatwave as Temperature Soars in April

By Vishwapati
Patna: People in Bihar are facing intense heat in April itself. The Meteorological Department, says that this year’s heat will be more intense than before, creating heatwave conditions in many areas of the state. Districts in western Bihar, such as Begusarai, Saran, Siwan, Gopalganj, Vaishali, West Champaran, East Champaran, Muzaffarpur, Sitamarhi, and Sheohar, may be hit by a heatwave. Hot winds are likely to blow in these areas for 2 to 3 days, while other regions will also see a sharp rise in temperature.

Record Temperature in March

This year, March recorded the highest temperature in the past three years. In Buxar, the temperature crossed 40 degrees in March for the first time in 52 years. The maximum temperature here was recorded at 41.4 degrees Celsius on March 27. Moreover, the average temperature across the state remained above normal, causing an early onset of heat.

Temperature Likely to Reach 44 Degrees in April

The Meteorological Department’s forecast says that the state’s maximum temperature may reach 44 degrees Celsius between April 6 and April 19. This may increase the number of heatwave days by 3 to 4 more than usual. Going out in the afternoon could be particularly dangerous, as the chances of heat wave will increase.

Less Rainfall This Summer

Bihar is expected to receive below-normal rainfall in April. Usually, 18.0 mm of rain falls during this month, but this year, rainfall may decrease by up to 40%. The lack of rain will intensify the heat. Both the administration and farmers must prepare in advance to cope with this situation.

Effect of Heat on Mango Production

Due to intense heat and temperature fluctuations, the infestation of Madhua insects on mango trees has increased. According to experts, when ticola (small fruits) appear on mango trees, the impact of Madhua insects generally decreases. However, this year, the extreme heat during the day and cold at night have intensified the pest problem, causing damage to mango orchards.

Measures to Prevent Pests

To protect mango trees from Madhua pests, farmers should mix 1 ml of Imidacloprid 17.8% SL in 3 litres of water and spray it on the trees. This will reduce pest infestation and help safeguard the mango crop.

Increased Fruit Dropping Worries Farmers

With rising temperature, mango fruits have started falling from trees, causing concern among farmers about reduced yields. Although mango flowering has been higher this year compared to last, extreme heat threatens their survival. If temperatures continue to rise, mango production may decline, leading to increased prices in the market.

Measures to Prevent Heat-related Illnesses

In view of the severe heat this time, people must take extra precautions. Avoid going out in the afternoon, drink plenty of water, and wear light cotton clothing. Also, children and the elderly should take special precautions to avoid problems like heat stroke.
