Tremors jolt many areas in Bihar, prompting people to rush out of their homes

PATNA, July 31: An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 on Richter Scale hit Nepal on Sunday morning with tremors felt in many parts of Bihar.

Officials said tremors were felt in Bihar capital Patna, Muzaffarpur, Munger, Bhagalpur, Begusarai and Katihar at around 8 am, prompting people living in high-rise buildings to rush out of their homes and take shelter in open space.

However, there was no information about loss of any life or property in Bihar, the officer added.

According to India’s National Center for Seismology, the earthquake occurred at 7:58 am (IST) and epicentre was around 147 km from Nepal capital, Kathmandu, at a depth of 10 km.

“Earthquake of Magnitude:5.5, Occurred on 31-07-2022, 07:58:10 IST, Lat: 27.14 & Long: 86.67, Depth: 10 Km, Location: 147km ESE of Kathmandu, Nepal,” the National Center for Seismology said in a tweet.

In Patna, people who rushed out of their homes in panic, said they witnessed the tremors around 8 am. The tremors lasted for a few seconds, after which the situation became normal, they added. However, the tremor was mild.
