Mohali, July 1: Shubhankar Sharma, the top-ranked Indian in men’s golf, finished with a tied fifth at the DP World Tour Italian Open held at the Adriatic Golf Club Cervia, Milano Marittima, Ravenna. With this result, the Paris-bound golfer has jumped 16 places to 60th in the Race to Dubai Rankings for the DP World Tour Championship that will be held in November in Dubai.
Shubhankar went into the last round, leading the pack along with four other golfers, at the end of 54 holes, after he completed a bogey-free 67 in Round 3. He shot 73 in the last round to finish with a total of 276 and a final score of -8 to finish tied fifth, capping off a great week. He had shot 68 each in the first two rounds.
Speaking on his performance, Shubhankar said, “I have been playing well for a while; however, it was not reflecting on the scorecard with clarity. I am happy that I could put those four rounds together this time. It could have been better on the last day, but it was literally blowing on the field. It was a 40-yard wind, most times. I am happy that I could hold my own and bring home a good finish. I move forward with a positive mindset and intent for the upcoming, important weeks, which include the Scottish Open, The Open and finally The Olympics. Three of the biggest events on my calendar this year, especially the latter two. I am certain that I will have some good results to share with my country folks.”
Shubhankar, who recently signed as the Brand Ambassador of Roundglass Sports, will be representing India at the Paris Olympics along with Gaganjeet Bhullar.
