Bhagalpur, Bihar, India: To protect archeological valuable treasure trove at Murli Pahad and Ajgaybinath Temple located in Sultanganj block of this district it seems conservation efforts could be initiated in near future.

Need of conserving the valuable structures has been stressed in a report submitted to Bihar Directorate of Archeology and Museums following study undertaken for assessing condition of important structures at both places.

The study for ascertaining condition of the structures was undertaken on directive of directorate. Dr Shiv Kumar Mishra, assistant director in directorate also holding charge of curator in Bhagalpur museum had undertaken the study.

It has been stated in report that in course of study of the archeologically important structure located at Murli Pahad, image of Sanatan Dharma deities engraved on three stone blocks located at western part of Pahad were identified.

The engraved images and written scriptures it is believed are of Gupta period, the report has mentioned. The engraved stone images and scriptures suggest river Ganga used to flow at distance form Murli Pahad in past, the report has further mentioned.

Referring river Ganga subsequently changing course used to flow between Ajgaybinath temple and Sultanganj town nearly twenty years back, apprehension has been expressed about submergence of the stone images and scriptures in river during this time.

The report states alike Murli Pahad at Ajgaybinath temple also images of Hindu deities and Buddha engraved on stone blocks could be found. Approximately there are 100 stone engraved images of Hindu deities around hillock atop which Ajgaybinath temple is situated.

The engraved stone block images at Ajgaybinath Temple are also important from archeological point of view. The report adds signs of weathering of stone engraved images and scriptures located on western side of Murli Pahad could be noticed in course of study.

Laying stress on need of conserving valuable stone images and scriptures the report has suggested inclusion of both the sites in list of protected sites. Construction of boundary wall around both the sites has been suggested for conservation and protection. Further soliciting cooperation of Indian National Trust for art and Cultural Heritage has been suggested for conservation of archeologically valuable images and scriptures.

The report has also pointed out need of documenting archeological importance of both sites and publication of details apart from conducting research on importance of images and scriptures.

As per available information Lalit Narayan Mandal, MLA, Sultanganj had recently raised a question in assembly related to conservation of archeologically important sites. In light of assembly question the Bihar Directorate of Archeology and Museums had asked for a study report regarding the sites.
