Purvanchal University win East Zone Inter University hockey title

Varanasi: Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal Vishwavidyalaya emerged champions in the East Zone Inter University Hockey (men) Tournament earning maximum points in the round-robin league at Amphitheatre Astro Turf Hockey Ground in Banaras Hindu University on Saturday.

Banaras Hindu University became runners up while Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth got the third position. Sambalpur University finished fourth.

All the top four teams have qualified for All India Inter University Hockey Championship.

In the first league match on the last day, Sambalpur University played 3-3 draw with Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth. Lal Saram Deepu scored two goals and Ankush scored one goal for Kashi Vidyapeeth.

In the second match of the day, Banaras Hindu University lost to Purvanchal University 2-5.  Arun scored 3 goals, Amid one and Vijender scored one goal for the winnings team.

The chief guest of the closing ceremony was Nitesh Nitin Kumar, an international hockey player. Dr Mayank Kumar Singh, deputy registrar, BHU, presided over the closing function.
