Patna: On the occasion of Republic Day, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar broke a 19-year-old tradition that he himself initiated in 2005. This unexpected departure from his customary practice has sparked significant discussions in political circles, particularly as it comes amidst other recent developments.
A Tradition Interrupted
After assuming office in 2005, Nitish Kumar introduced a unique tradition: following the flag hoisting ceremony at Gandhi Maidan on Independence Day and Republic Day, he would visit a Mahadalit Tola (a hamlet predominantly inhabited by marginalised communities) to oversee the hoisting of the national flag there. This practice continued even in 2014, when Nitish briefly stepped down as Chief Minister, with Jitan Ram Manjhi upholding the tradition during his tenure.
This year, however, Nitish Kumar did not visit the Mahadalit Tola in Mahuli village, Phulwarisharif block, near Patna city, despite extensive administrative preparations. A large stage was constructed, roads were repaired, and all arrangements were finalised for the event. However, the Chief Minister, after attending the flag hoisting at Gandhi Maidan, returned directly to his residence, marking the first time in 19 years that the Mahadalit Tola visit did not occur.
Vijay Chaudhary Steps In
In Nitish Kumar’s absence, Bihar minister Vijay Chaudhary attended the Mahuli village ceremony, where Subhash Ravidas, an elder of the Mahadalit Tola, hoisted the flag. Notably, Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary, who is also the minister in charge of Patna, did not attend the event, adding to the political intrigue surrounding the occasion.
Speculation About the Chief Minister’s Health
The Chief Minister’s absence has fuelled speculation. A leader from the Janata Dal (United) [JD(U)] cited health reasons, claiming that Nitish Kumar was unwell and needed to rest ahead of an upcoming yatra scheduled to begin the following day. However, no official statement has been issued regarding his health or his decision to skip the Mahadalit Tola visit.
