Bhagalpur: For Kajal Devi wife of Lakhpati Tanti it was really an emotional moment when she was handed over her stolen new born male child at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College Hospital (JLNMCH) here yesterday. She was unable to hold her tears of joy as the child was back in her lap.
In fact, life had come to halt for Kajal and her husband Lakhpati, a handloom weaver as their new born child was stolen from labour room of JLNMCH on Monday morning this week.
A resident of Noorpur Kerriala village located in outskirts of city, Kajal had delivered a male child on intervening night of last Sunday and Monday. Following delivery of the child her mother-in-law was with Kajal at hospital.
Her mother-in-law who had been to washroom in morning, on her return from washroom found the child missing. Unable to locate the child the family members later approached police. On complaint of Lakhpati a case was registered by police under section 363/370 of IPC at Barari PS.
Acting swiftly on directive of police authorities a team headed by Ajay Kumar Choudhury, DSP (city) was constituted for recovery of the missing child. Though it was difficult to get a lead in almost blind case however foolproof investigation helped police team register success in recovering the stolen newly born from Son Phadi area of Godda district in Jharkhand on Thursday this week.
A woman identified as Meena alias Mukku Murmu allegedly involved in theft of the child was also arrested by police team. As per information a woman with a child in her arm leaving maternity ward of hospital was seen in CCTV footage scanned by police.
However, the woman in footage could not be identified. Subsequently police team recovered a bag from labour room. The unclaimed bag belonging to the woman involved in theft, provided the needed lead. Apart from a feeding bottle a mobile number and a bus ticket was found in the bag.
The mobile number was found to be of a person who resides in Godda district. His interrogation helped police team in reaching to the woman and recovery of the child. As per information the woman following her arrest told police that her desire to have a male child led her commit the crime.
The woman informed she was married twelve years back and is mother of a daughter. Her husband stays outside, she further informed police. As per police she said that few months back when she had come to JLNMCH with a patient she conceived idea of stealing newly born male child from maternity ward.
Subsequently for stealing newly born male child she came to JLNMCH alone from Godda and stayed in maternity ward on pretext of being attendant of a delivery patient, the arrested woman said. Meanwhile it is being looked into by police whether any other person had been involved in theft of the child along with the arrested woman.
