Mokama, Gopalganj byelections on November 3

By Alok Mohit

PATNA: Byelections for seven assembly constituencies in six states, including Mokama and Goplaganj in Bihar, will be held on November 3.

The Election Commission of India (ECI), while announcing the byelection schedule in New Delhi on Monday, said the notification for bypolls would be issued on October 7 and the last date for nominations would be October 14. The date of scrutiny of nominations and last date for withdrawal of candidature would be October 15 and October 17, respectively, the ECI said.

Voting would take place on November 3 and counting would be taken up on November 6.

Byelection has been necessitated in Mokama assembly constituency after the seat fell vacant post disqualification of Anant Kumar Singh of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Singh, the-then MLA from Mokama, was disqualified in July after his conviction in a case.

Byelection in Gopalganj will take place as BJP’s Subhash Singh, who held the seat, passed away in August.

The two byelections in the state Bihar is being seen as the first major electoral battle between the ruling Grand Alliance (GA) and the BJP after chief minister Nitish Kumar’s party JD(U) walked out of the NDA and formed a new government with Lalu Prasad’s RJD, Congress and other parties in August this year.

While BJP, the lone Opposition party in Bihar legislative assembly, is set to contest both the seats, sources in the GA said talks were already on among the partners over allotment of seats. The sources said RJD, in all likelihood, would contest the Mokama seat and field Anant Singh’s wife Neelam Devi. As far as Gopalganj is concerned, the JD(U) and the Congress are both keen on contesting the seat.
