Patna, July 26: Bihar education minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary on Tuesday said the state government had taken a serious note of the matter related to some government schools in Kishanganj district observing weekly holidays on Friday, instead of Sunday, without any official permission.
Chaudhary told reporters that an inquiry had been ordered into the matter and the district education officer of Kishanganj asked to submit a report.
“Appropriate action will be taken after receiving the report,” he said, adding that all state-run schools were bound to follow the government rules.
According to reports as many as 37 government schools in Kishanganj, a district in northeast Bihar having a significant Muslim population, had been observing holidays on Friday.
A government officer in Kishanganj said some schools in the district had been observing Friday as weekly holiday for a long time. “We are investigating how and when it started,” he added.
The headmaster in-charge of a middle school at Karbala in the district, Mohammad Waseem, told a TV news channel that observing weekly holidays on Friday had been practice for long. “We are not aware if there is any government guideline on this. If the government asks us to change the weekly holiday to Sunday, we will abide by it,” he added.
