Bhagalpur: To ensure the services of dedicated excise department personnel could be utilised in conducting raids for the recovery of liquor and also in the enforcement of rules concerning prohibition, the third group centre of the Prohibition Excise and Registration Department has been established here.

The centre was officially opened by the District Magistrate (DM) Subrat Kumar Sen and the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anand Kumar on Monday of this week.

Whenever it is required, excise department constables stationed at the group centre here would be drafted to conduct raids in different districts, including this district, which falls under three police ranges. As per available information, the districts that would be covered by the group centre here include Banka, Naugachia, Munger, Shiekhpura, Lakhisarari, Jamui, Purnia, Katihar, Araria, Kishanganj, Begusarari, and this district.

For raid and enforcement purposes, previously the Excise Department had to seek the services of members of the district police force many times. It is felt that the establishment of a group centre here would reduce the dependency of the excise department on district police forces in conducting raids and enforcing prohibition.

The group centre here, located in Habibpur, has the capacity to accommodate 100 constables. However, seventy-six constables of the department are presently stationed at the centre.

Speaking on the occasion, DM appreciated the achievements of the excise department here in recent months. Technical besides other required resources have been made available at the group centre here, he informed. In his speech, SSP expressed his hope that the establishment of a group centre here would help speed up the anti-drug campaign.
