Patna: Saket Kumar of Bihar won the Malta Blitz Chess Championships held in Mellieha city of Malta scoring six points out of seven.
According to Dharmendra Kumar, secretary, All Bihar Chess Association, at the end of the seventh round, three players jointly emerged on top with six points. The winner was decided on the basis of tie-break points. On the basis of tie break points, Saket Kumar of India (Patna, Bihar) was declared first, Bouget Alexandre of France was declared runner-up, while Ohler Julius of Germany was declared third. Despite being defeated by Bouget in the fifth round of this international blitz tournament played among 54 players from 27 countries, Saket did not lose his spirits and won the title by winning both the remaining matches.
In the final round, the 33rd seeded player Saket, playing on the number three board, defeated the third seeded Candidate of the championships, Candidate Master Banden Claros Aaron, in a tough match. He not only established himself on the joint top but also on the basis of a better tie-break, became the winner of the tournament.
