Patna: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar formally inaugurated the Sepak Takraw World Cup 2025 today at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Kankarbagh. The Chief Minister posed for photographs with the players and organisers in front of the Sepak Takraw World Cup trophy. During the event, he interacted with the athletes, extended his best wishes, and greeted the attendees by waving to the crowd. He also visited the sports ground to personally congratulate and encourage the players and representatives from the participating nations.
This marks the first time Bihar is hosting the Sepak Takraw World Cup. The tournament, scheduled from March 20 to March 25, 2025 at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Patna, will see participation from over 300 players and coaches representing 20 countries worldwide.
By organising this international event, Bihar has carved a new chapter in its history. This is a moment of immense pride for the people of the state, as it not only places Bihar on the global sports map but also fosters a robust sports culture locally. The event is expected to inspire local athletes by exposing them to world-class facilities and competition.
Sepak Takraw, a traditional South-East Asian sport, involves players using their feet, head, knees, and chest to manoeuvre a rattan ball. Often described as a blend of football and volleyball, the game demands exceptional flexibility, balance, and skill. While it enjoys immense popularity in countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Myanmar, Bihar is now poised to establish its presence on the international sports stage through this event.
During the ceremony, Datuk Abdul Halim Kadir, Secretary General of the International Sepak Takraw Federation, presented Chief Minister Nitish Kumar with a memento as a token of honour. In turn, the Chief Minister honoured Bihar’s Sepak Takraw player, Bobby Kumar, with a memento for his contributions to the sport.
The event was attended by prominent figures, including Water Resources Minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, Chief Secretary Deepak Kumar, Director General of Police Vinay Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary of the General Administration and Sports Department Dr. B. Rajender, Secretary to the Chief Minister Kumar Ravi, Special Officer Gopal Singh, Director General of Bihar State Sports Authority Dr. Raveendran Sankaran, and Director of the Sports Department Mahendra Kumar. Also present were Bun Chai Lor Pipath, President of the International Sepak Takraw Federation, Datuk Abdul Halim Kadir, Secretary General of the International Sepak Takraw Federation, and Yogendra Singh Dahiya, President of the Sepak Takraw Federation of India, alongside senior officials, coaches, and players from participating nations.
This landmark event underscores Bihar’s commitment to promoting sports and fostering international camaraderie through the spirit of competition.
